Sony introduced its official handsets under its new branding after the split from Ericsson at CES 2012. The handsets certainly delivers from a looks perspective and hardware specification. The Sony Xperia S and Sony Xperia Ion.
Sony Xperia S
This handset features a 4.3″ 1280×720 display, dual-core 1.5GHZ CPU, 1GB of Ram and in two size options of 16 and 32GB. One specification that really got us excited is the 12 Megapixel Camera which uses an Exmor R backlit sensor, this is similar technology used on high end point and shoot Sony Cameras, which hopefully should produce some iPhone 4S rivalled image quality. It also has a 1.3 Megapixel front facing camera, comes in both black and white and unfortunately will ship with Android 2.3 but an expected update to 4.0 in Quarter 2 2012.
Sony Xperia Ion
The Sony Xperia Ion is also boasting a large 4.6″ 1280×720 display, same 12 megapixel as the Sony Xperia S, dual-core 1.5 GHZ CPU, 1GB of Ram and either 16 or 32GB options. The interesting part of this handset is the aluminium shell that denotes a slightly heavier but good quality sensation. Again Android 2.3 but a promised 4.0 update.
Both Products will have Sony Customised UI. Personally we would like to see an option to disable the skin done by Sony.
No details on an Australian release but based on previous experience I would expect the Sony Xperia S in Quarter 3.
