Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard for Apple iPad Review

Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard for Apple iPad Review

In the world of iPad accessories it can be daunting task to find a decent keyboard that has both form and function yet aesthetically works well. Logitech has thought of this issue deeply and brought us a brand new product called the “Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover”.

The first thing you will notice is how thin the keyboard is yet the keys feel solid enough for a long typing session. It isn’t a full size keyboard but the keys are very large and after about two hours of practice you should be speeding along – the key feel reminded me of the Logitech diNovo Edge I used to use. The top row of numbers are also “Function Keys” that enable iOS shortcuts, such as home, search, cut, copy and paste.  The layout is intuitive and works well in conjunction to the iPad’s touch features. The rear is aluminium and matches quite well to the iPads aluminium. When not in use it actually attaches using magnets and acts in a similar way to the standard Apple Smart Cover. This means the open to unlock feature works as well. I only wish it had slightly stronger magnetic connection as I found it would sometimes disconnect quite easily. In the hand it feels like a premium product.

The case is slightly rear heavy as it holds the rechargeable battery that should last for about 3 months of decent use per day. However this weight actually allows the keyboard to balance the iPad nicely when being used. The iPad docks directly into the keyboard and solidly locks in with another magnet – so make sure you insert the right way. It can be used in portrait but doesn’t connect using magnets. It connects to the iPad using bluetooth which means no wires and has no delay when in use. It only comes in a piano black colour which matches my iPad nicely but I hope they decide to make a white version to. I would say pair this with a nice snap on cover for full protection but alas the iPad wouldn’t fit in the dock. So its up to you to make the trade-off decision of protecting the front screen but not the back – maybe a sleeve?

Having used and seen nearly all bluetooth keyboards available for the iPad, the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard cover has to be my favourite so far. I give it 4/5 Product Feedback Stars and our Gold Award as it shows good innovation with such nice build quality. The retail on this is $99 AUD which isn’t actually too bad considering most decent cases cost around $60-$70 AUD.
